The New York Times sought to increase its influence in the local NYC weekend leisure market. Simultaneously, Citi Bike (owned by a private company and not affiliated with Citibank) was looking to enhance rider experience and increase usage across their bike-sharing network throughout New York City.

Both organizations identified an opportunity to create a symbiotic partnership that would leverage the NYT's trusted content and Citi Bike's extensive mobility network.


Implementation

The application was launched with a six-month pilot program targeting both existing Citi Bike users and NYT subscribers. The rollout included:

Steven Mendelson, Managing Partner

Steven Mendelson is a distinguished executive and entrepreneur with over three decades of experience spanning entertainment, technology, digital media, and management consulting. His career is defined by transformative leadership roles at major corporations and success as a serial entrepreneur with multiple successful exits.

As an Executive Vice President at Tri Star Pictures and Division Head at Sony, Mendelson developed deep expertise in content strategy and entertainment business operations. His visionary approach to digital media emerged during his tenure with Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures, where he helped establish Starwave. This pioneering digital media company developed and launched ESPN.com and a gaming division, both of which were subsequently acquired by The Walt Disney Company in a landmark deal approaching $1 billion.

Mendelson's entrepreneurial spirit has led him to co-found six technology startups, with two notable exits through acquisitions by Viggle Inc. and Houghton Mifflin Publishing. His strategic insight was honed during his time at Bain & Company, where he consulted for European clients, and as co-founder of the USA division of PIPC Consulting, which was later acquired by Cognizant.

Most recently, Mendelson has leveraged his extensive experience as the Fractional Chief Revenue Officer for Hollo.AI Inc., an innovative artificial intelligence company based in Los Angeles. He continues to provide strategic consulting services to a diverse portfolio of clients across technology, consumer packaged goods, financial services, advertising, entertainment, digital education, energy, agriculture, and food & beverage industries.
